PEG in ligations, why?

Hi all,

I've heard from many people that PEG ca be used as a tool in *tricky*
ligations, but never why this is the case. I assume that PEG will
increase the concentration by adsorbing H2O, and thus may be helpful
when dealing with dilute DNA. But if concentration is not a problem,
is there any benefit from PEG in ligations?

Furthermore, what MW PEG is used? 8000? And how much?

Any input will be appreciated!

Cheers,
