culturing microbes

A friend of mine is going into the bioremediation business and would
like to know a little bit about how bacteria are cultured and the
nutrients that are required for optimum growth.  He is especially
interested in culturing grease and oil eating microbes.

I would appreciate any info regarding the nutrient required and the
process involved in culturing bacteria.
