I can answer a small part of your question.
The "specialty" of PVDS-membranes is their extreme hydrophobicity. The cores 
of most if not all proteins are very hydrophobic. Since exposure to SDS 
denatures proteins, they tend to stick very well to hydrophobic surfaces 
during blotting.
