Staining agarose gels

   I have successfully stained gels with acridine orange, which you can
then visualize with a UV lamp. The advantage is that ssDNA glows red, and
dsDNA glows green.  For a reference see Gary K. McMaster and Gordon G.
Carmichael, PNAS vol.74, no.11, pp4835-8, 1977.  Note, however, that you
need to use 100fold LESS acridine orange than they suggest, or it takes a
week to destain.
