thiophosphorylated DNA stability

Hello fellow netters,

     I have read a number of protocols stating that thiophosphorylated
nucleic acids (e.g., generated by incorporation of phosphorothioate dNTPs
or NTPs) must be stored in the presence of a reducing agent such as DTT. 
These protocols do not state what happens if DTT is not added.  Would
anybody out there know what actually happens?  More specifically, does the
oxidation product lose the sulfur due to instability?  Does this result in
a nick or is the phosphate backbone left intact?
