Silver Staining and BME

These artifact bands usually result from contamination of a reagent or 
piece of equipment with keratin. Mercaptoethanol is a pretty good 
protein solvent, and it doesn't take much to show up on a silver 
stain. Taking suitable precautions (gloves, careful washing, good 
reagents) I haven't seen any of these artifacts in ten years.
