In plant RNA extractions, PVP is used to remove phenolics, terpenes,
tannins, etc., which are ubiquitous in some plants and can crosslink RNA
and DNA (see "An efficient method for isolation of RNA and DNA from plants
containing polyphenolics" John ME, NAR, 20:2381, 1992).
