Smearing of PCR product

In my experience the template quality is apt to be the source of this 
problem once you have eliminated the contaminationa of reagents as the 
culprit.  
Sometimes we only needed to quit doing the PCR overnight (after the 
cycles finished it would sit at 4 C till next morning) and be sure to 
take the reactions out right after it finished.  By adding the 
gel-loading/stop solution or placing at -20 the smears were not 
present.
