Guanidine HCl compatibility with phenol:C

I am not familiar with guanidine HCl, all of my work is done with
guanidine thiocyanate.  When I tried to extract the lysate of
phenol/chloroform, the result was almost a gel.... you want to extract the
p/c mixture..... why?
