BSA in PCR reaction: role of?

     G'day
     what is the role of BSA whan added to a PCR reaction?  It is reported 
     to improve the results, but is this by providing non-specific targets 
     for proteases or binding (proteinaceous) inhibitors or what? any ideas 
     or experiences appreciated.
