ligation and UV

Hi. A recent Biotechniques article describes a means 
to improve ligation/transformation efficiency by using
Guanosine to protect DNA during gel purification.  
See Biotechnique 21 (5) 898-903 (1996).  Have any of
you tried this? or would you comment on this seemingly 
simple method?  If you have tried, then could you
give me an idea as to what kind of improvement one 
might get when 366-nm UV irradiation is used (instead 
of 312 nm)?
