DNA extracyion from birch

Dear all,

Does anyone have a good method for extracting DNA from young birch 
seedlings for use in Southern blots?  We have tried a variety of methods 
(including CTAB, phenol extractions etc) but have problems with extremely 
viscous supernatants (even when the plant:extraction volume ratio is 
low).  Any help would be much appreciated.
