Another possiblity is light driven degradation of your medium. 
Depending on your medium type, black particles can be generated due to
exposure of the medium to fluorescent light, even at 4oC.  It can be
time dependent, i.e the longer exposure, the more black particles.  Put
yellow filters in cold room and an expiration date on the medium.  In
our hands, the medium thus affected does not grow cells as well as fresh
