In about 95% of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and about
15% of adult patients with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) a
characteristic chromosomal abnormality, the philadelphia chromosome (Ph1),
can be found. This philadelphia chromosome is a translocation of
chromosomes 9 and 22 [t(9:22)(q34;q11)].
Especially in the case of ALL it has great prognostic significance.

Our laboratory has a long lasting experience in the diagnosis of the
philadelphia chromosome. We are one of two reference laboratories for the
molecular diagnosis of this chromosomal abnormality within the German
ALL-therapy-study (Prof. Hoelzer, Frankfurt).
We now intend to standardize the diagnostic procedure since very different
sensitivities and specifities have been reported for different test
systems (based on RT-PCR). We are therefore looking worldwide for
laboratories that are performing this kind of diagnostics and are possibly
interested in cooperation for optimization of this diagnostic procedure.
I would therefore be grateful for postal addresses of centers or
commercial companies concerned with this kind of diagnostics.
