Ph.D Graduate Research Assistantship at University of South Florida

I would like to recruit a Ph.D. graduate student with a strong
background and interest in ichthyology and evolution. The successful
candidate will be an RA on a three year NSF grant to assess the
phylogenetic relationships of labroid fish. Fishes of the perciform
suborder Labroidei comprise about 15% of all living fish and include the
eastern Pacific surfperches, reef dwelling damselfishes, parrotfishes, and
wrasses, and the well-known cichlids. This wide array of species is united
in the Labroidei by the presence of a modified pharyngeal apparatus used
in processing prey. Unfortunately, the sheer diversity of this assemblage
has hindered the construction of a reliable evolutionary classification.
Our research is aimed at providing a better understanding of the
evolutionary relationships of labroid fishes. We will collect DNA sequence
data from three different genes; mitochondrial cytochrome b, nuclear
Growth Hormone, and nuclear Titin. These data will be used to estimate
relationships among the species and, by doing so, identify major changes
accompanying labroid diversification.

The successful candidate must be able to start no later than the Spring
1999 term (i.e., January 1999). The stipend is $12,494 for 12 months not
including a tuition waiver ($8,020 over the three years). The Ph.D. degree
will be awarded through the Department of Biology at USF
(www.cas.usf.edu/biology/index.html)

Minimum Qualifications:
1) Meet all general qualifications for entry as a graduate student in the
   Department of Biology at USF.
2) B.S. with a GPA of at least 3.2.
3) A Masters degree in Biology is desirable but not necessary
4) Combined Verbal and Quantitative GRE score of at least 1100.
5) A strong background and interest in ichthyology.

Please send a statement of interest, CV and names and addresses of at
least two references to the address below or by EMail to
