Low Efficiency from Electroporation

Dear All,
I have been having problems transforming my ligation product into a
competent XL1blue strain. First of all I am only getting very few colonies
and secondly when I try to retrieve the plasmid I and getting a smear on
the gel as if the plasmid has somehow degraded.
Has anybody experienced anything similar to this,
