Absorbance of DNA at 260/280 nm

Heard someone say that if DNA was really really clean that if you run a
wavelength scan of it, instead of a relatively broad peak from ~230 ->
~300 nm that centres on 260 nm (OK, 259 nm for the pedants), you get a
peak at 260 nm and then a separate one at 280 nm. Is this complete BS or
is there some truth in it?
