It was originally a copper like plate with individual bullet shaped
wells soldered (?) in and projecting under the flat plate, painted
black. Originally made by GeneSys Instruments Ltd. (no relation) and
sold initially by Cambio Ltd. before they licensed the technology to
Hybaid. Peter Dean at Cambio could tell you the history as I believe it
was his original idea and possibly a UK patent exists.
The problem with being on the cutting edge is that you occasionally get
sliced from time to time....
