...something on the line the others suggested: why do you use 293 cells?
since they are so easily transfectable they might give enormous CAT levels,
saturating your assay. Either use other cells or use less DNA or dilute
your lysates. BTW Luciferase has the big advantage of larger linear
range... as example: using 293 cells I dilute my luciferase extracts 1/100
compared to other cells (even COS) just to avoid overflowing my
luminometer...
