Hi there,

For parentage testing, or any genotyping in general, either multi-locus or
single-locus DNA sequences can be used. Single-locus sequences such as SSRs
(microsatellites or STRs) are preferred in most cases. But multi-locus
sequences like minisatellites are used sometimes since they are more
polymorphic.

Molecular markers such as RAPD, RFLP, and maybe AFLP can also be used. Bur
in order for the markers to be most useful, they must be single-copy,
polymorphic, co-dominant and easy to type. The current winner seems
microsatellites.
