Yes the kits sure are handy.  For total RNA I would go with trizol or
one of the plant specific reagents they are selling nowadays.  Sometimes
those homemade brews just dont work because of some small oversight...
often the methods papers dont really tell you the best way to make or
use the reagents, .... labs often have there own tweaks that make the
published protocols work much better.
