The paper that is most often cited is:

McCutchan, J. H., and J. S. Pagano. 1968. Enhancement of the
infectivity of simian virus 40 deoxyribonucleic acid with
dietylaminoethyl-dextran. J. Natl. Cancer Inst. 41:351-356.

I am not aware of an earlier paper, and would be very interested if
anyone is aware of one.
