Single-strand DNA nick plasmid assay query

I'm assaying proteins for single-strand DNA nicking activity using
supercoiled plasmids.  If any s/s nicking is present, the nicked plasmid
migrates at a slower rate than the uncut supercoiled plasmid in a 1% agarose
1XTBE gel.  Does the presence of ethidium bromide in the gel during
electrophoresis improve the separation between the uncut and nicked bands?
