What does EDTA do in refolding?

I have frequently seen EDTA included in protein refolding buffers, e.g.
GdmCl or urea. Is it included to minimise proteolysis by chelating metal
ions? or is it for other purposes as well (if i remember correctly, serine
proteases shouldn't be inhibited this way)? Thanks for any insight.
