Is FORMAMIDE necessary for hybridizations?

Depends ...

Church and Gilberts system, using very high conc of SDS, needs nothing
other than a buffer. 

RNA blots (northerns) traditionally use 50% formammide (w/ Denhardt's)
while DNA blots (Southerns) don't.
