Detecting sugars

I would like to look at various sugar levels e.g. G-1-P, R-1-P etc in 
bacteria grown under a variety of conditions.  Can anyone please 
point me in the direction of the best way to isolate the sugar pool 
and then to quantitate and identify, maybe mass spec but does someone 
know a better way, maybe HPLC based?
