SMART RACE kit

I used the clontech's smart race cDNA amplification kit but failed in
fist-strand synthesis.Even the control human placental total RNA doesn't
produce any product in subsequent race experiment.
I followed the steps in the user manual.I can't figure out which step tends
to cause the failure.
Is there anything wrong with this kit or any steps in the protocol is
incorrect?
