PCR-based alpha-thalassemia protocols?

Hi folks,

Does anyone have, or know of, a PCR-based protocol for detecting
alpha-thalassemia deletions (multiplex or whatever) whereby the products are
less than 1kb? I've seen some protocols but all the products that amplify
across the deletions are 2-3kb. . . . . or is there a reason for the larger
products (like variable breakpoints or something. . )??
