PCR and unexpected products

There's a PCR manual by Alkami (www.Alkami.com) that says that
decreasing the template concentration increases the primer/template
ratio, which leads to greater efficiency but decreases the specificity
leading to the generation of unspecific amplicons. This is probably
what you're seeing.
The Alkami website has a PDF format of this manual and I have found it
very helpful.
