Chemistry of Silver Stain

Hi, 

I've been reading several papers on silver staining, each one proposing a
different protocol, some simple, some more sophisticated. Others use rather
exotic chemicals like 2,7 naphtalene-disulfonic acid or HEPES.

I have a rough idea how silver stain is working (recuction of the silver
nitrate to metallic silver), but are there any papers out there about the
chemistry of silver staining?

The more i read, the more i get confused.
