problem with minipreps

My students are having trouble with alkaline lysis minipreps. They 
get an extremely viscous DNA solution after adding the KAc (P3). i.e. 
the mass of membranes and genomic DNA is not pelleting. Any 
suggestions as to what the problem might be?
