Another problem are the growing microorganisms in the chamber. I guess they feed on the chemicals and they may be not only a hygienical but also a contamination problem e.g. if you extract DNA out of the gel. Especially for DNA/Agarose gels I don't know if the accumulating EtBr is problematic??
