yeast expression

Hi
I am working on heterologous expression of chitinase gene i.e., in yeast .I 
am facing some problem with expression.I want to know whether colloidal 
chitin supports the yeast growth or not because I am not getting colonies on 
this medium.Some time I get red color colonies instead of white What may be 
the reseason??
If anybody knows please help me
