What volume to use when expressing and purifying a protein?

I am expressing, purifying (and hopefully crystallizing) a protein from E. 
coli.  My question is, what volume should this all take place in?  Is there 
a rough approximation?  Would 100 mL be enough for a fair amount of protein 
to be produced that may be isolated and purified?
