Super Optimal, Catabolite repression. Originally, there was SOB, the
rather hyperbolically named Super Optimal Broth, and for experiments on
catabolite repression, glucose was added, making SOC.

Both were formulated by Doug Hanahan; he explains the origin (in a quoted
