Agarose for electrophoresis has been purified to contain few if any  
charged groups, which would cause a phenomenon called electroendosmosis.  
This can seriously degrade resolution. Exception: Counter-stream  
immunoelectrophoresis and certain modes of capillary electrophoresis,  
where electroendosmosis is actually required for separation.
