The Internet has nothing to do with it. A long time ago,
user names (and aliases) were restricted to 8 characters.
This hasn't been true in most places for nearly a decade,
and has never been true on the Internet. For the sake of
consistency, David Kristofferson still makes BIOSCI mailing
list names no more than 8 characters long.
