how 2 ID soil microbes

hello
 I was wondering if someone could point me in
the proper direction to ID (to genus) a population
of microbes taken from soil.
  I don't want to do any 16s probes or anything that
fancy, but if you could piont me to a standard method,
textbook or other publications on plating or biochem.
tests it would be most usefull.
