Micro Student Asking About Jobs

Hi, I am a first year Micro student, and am wondering what sort of jobs 
there are out there in the world after I get my degree.  Currently, I am 
looking at getting my doctorate in Medical Microbiology and Infectious 
Diseases and want to do research into vaccines, drugs, etc.  I would 
really enjoy this type of research job, but from speaking to some people 
in other sciences, they tell me that getting a job in pure science is 
pretty much impossible these days.  I want to avoid becoming a professor 
at some university, and am trying to avoid med school like the plague.  
But it seems more and more like I will have to do one of the two.  
	Are there jobs out there in research MMID?
