Dear Ed,

There is a product referred to as Ceramic Hydroxylapatite (HAP) which I
occassionally use at work for purification of proteins. It is available
as bulk resin and is suitable for use on an FPLC system when packed in an
appropriate column. It also has an advantage over the old HAP in that is
can more easily be recycled without creating 'fines' which will eventually
clog the column; but, of course, it is more expensive than the
old-fashioned stuff. It seems to have the same binding properties as
regular HAP when used for the purification of any of several different
enzymes, and can give better resolution. Offhand, I don't remember from
where we buy it; but, if this sounds like what your looking for, then let
me know and I'll find out the source.

PS One important caveat: don't use EDTA in your solutions. It will,
after repeated or prolonged exposure, turn your ceramic HAP into a
substance resembling cement! :(

For a quicker reply, contact me at work: walsh at neb.com
