Hello Richard,
Why not try a direct observation method, Candida is quite big enough to
pick up on haemocytometer slides. Use a standard volume and assess
biovolume. It means hours spent at a microscope instead of in front of a
"pretty flashing lights gadget" but will sure as hell sort out whether
your third year student has the sticking power for real research.
