Unless there is a break in the skin, antibodies to Strep. A will not be
produced. Crossreactive Abs' will be produced in the pharynx. The strep a
will be killed but the Abs' will also attack the connective tissue in the
body (an auto-immune response). In the case of Rhuematic Fever, the
connective tissue of the heart valves is damaged.
