I have always seen slants used to store cultures on a solid substrate
for durations which do not require freezing.  They are better than
plates in this way, because their small surface area and air-tight
caps allow prevent them from drying out rapidly.

I have never run matings on slants, but rather on filter membranes.
Why are you running your matings on slants?
