Logistic expression and bacterial growth

I am a Ph.D. student currently enrolled in an Ecology course (it is not a
microbial ecology course but a general course).  All students must write a
paper titled "The logistic expression in ecology: its history, uses, and
abuses".  I would like to write mine from a microbiology perspective.  I
have obtained several references but am having some problems with the
history component, particularly early references.  Could someone point me
in the right direction and I will do the rest.  Thanks.
