Place 3% potassium hydroxide onto a microscope slide.
Pick up a colony using a sterile cocktail stick.
Mix the bacteria into the hydroxide solution.
The cell walls of Gram Neg organisms are permeable allowing the
DNA to be extracted. This causes the hydroxide solution to become vicous
and form strings when the cocktail stick is pulled away from the 
solution.
This is a very quick test.I do not have the reference that give the 
correlation.
