Hi Olivier,
Spectinomycin is a aminoglycoside-antibiotic. it is obtained from
cultures of Streptomyces spectabilis (a fungus). It acts - like all
aminoglycosides - by binding to bacterial ribosomes (small spheric
particles that are essential for protein synthesis in the bacterium).
It has a primarily bactericidal effect.
The main field of application is against penicillin-resistant gonococci
(or if the patient with gonorrhoea has a penicillin allergy).
