TEM is the first three letters of the patient's name (Temoniera) from whom
the first b-lactamase in E. coli was recovered. The original description of
TEM-1 is found in Datta et al., Nature 208:239-241, 1965. Also see
Mederios, A. British Med. Bull. 40:18-27, 1984 for an old but excellent
review on the original plasmid mediated b-lactamases.

Hope this helps.
