labeling bacteria

Collegues,
I'd like to get your opinion about radiolabelling bacteria. I desire to
label with 14C a long-lasting, low turn-over cell constituent. Which
would be the best choice? DNA? rRNA? Cell wall? Cell membrane?
Other?

The cells will be grown, washed and starved, then injected into sediment
cores for up to 400 h.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark Fuller, Ph.D.
