L. monocytogenes is an aerobic gram positive bacilli. Listeria is found in soil
and vegetation and is carried by many domestic and wild animals.
Listeria causes sepsis and meningitis in immunocompromised patients. The
organism can pass the placenta and have serious effects on the developing
fetus, including abortion. Outbreaks of
Listeria infections are usually traced to cheese or dairy products that are
improperly and not pastuerized at all.
Infections are usually treated with the penicillins, tetracycline,
erythromycin, and aminoglycosides. Current recommendations are a combination of
ampicillinor penicillin with an aminoglycoside.
