Are you aware of the bioencapsulation research group (BRG)?

The BRG produce a newsletter (and a listserv group) which covers a 
lot of the points you mention in your post. Perhaps there is a case 
for the creation of a bionet.* group to parallel the above resources.

I've been working upon the immobilisation of microbial cells for a 
few years now and remain quite surprised at the low level of 
resources available on the net regarding this interesting subject.
